Mariners' Rodríguez sprains ankle in wall crash

Seattle Mariners superstar Julio Rodríguez exited Sunday's game against the Houston Astros after crashing into the center-field wall.

The 23-year-old hit the fence hard while attempting to track down a ball hit by Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez. He immediately crumpled to the ground in pain while clutching his right ankle.

Teammates and trainers came to Rodríguez's aid and helped him to his feet. He limped off the field under his own power.

Rodríguez's exit necessitated several defensive changes. Victor Robles slid over from right field to man center, while Ty France came in to play first base so Luke Raley could move into right.

"He's got a little bit of an ankle sprain there," Mariners manager Scott Servais told Shane Lantz of The Associated Press postgame.

"Right now, what I've been told is it's going to be day-to-day. We'll see where it's at there. So I think hopefully, knock on wood, we escaped something there - but what an effort.”

Servais said that initial X-rays came back negative and that Rodríguez will undergo an MRI to get more information.

Rodríguez owns a .263/.315/.372 line this season.
