Dodgers land Flaherty from Tigers
The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired right-hander Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers for catcher/first baseman Thayron Liranzo and shortstop Trey Sweeney, the teams announced.
Flaherty signed a one-year, $14-million deal with the Tigers in the offseason and rewarded them with a stellar bounce-back campaign. The 28-year-old posted a 2.95 ERA, 3.11 FIP, and 0.96 WHIP along with 133 strikeouts and only 19 walks over his 18 starts in Detroit.
He'll provide a huge boost to a Dodgers rotation that's once again been hit hard by injuries. Flaherty instantly slots in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tyler Glasnow.
Liranzo, ranked as the Dodgers' No. 3 prospect by Baseball America, hit .220/.344/.356 with seven homers and 30 RBIs across 74 games with High-A Great Lakes. The 21-year-old is primarily a catcher but has spent a considerable amount of time at first base.
Sweeney, 24, was ranked by BA as the Dodgers' No. 28 prospect. In 96 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City, he hit .255/.334/.427 with 13 homers, 62 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases. Los Angeles originally acquired Sweeney in a trade with the New York Yankees during the offseason.
The New York Yankees backed out of a trade for Flaherty before the Dodgers acquired him, sources told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. New York was concerned about the pitcher's lower back after reviewing his medical records.
