The Pittsburgh Pirates traded veteran left-hander Martín Pérez to the San Diego Padres in exchange for pitching prospect Ronaldys Jimenez, the teams announced.

Pérez, put up a 5.20 ERA, 4.94 FIP, and 1.65 WHIP with 63 strikeouts over 16 starts with the Pirates after joining them on a one-year, $8-million deal in the offseason.

In San Diego, he'll likely serve as a depth piece who can be a back-end starter and work out of the bullpen. The 33-year-old is the fourth pitcher acquired by the Padres ahead of this year's deadline, alongside relievers Tanner Scott, Jason Adam, and Bryan Hoeing.

Pérez, a 13-year veteran, has spent the majority of his career with the Texas Rangers, who won last year's World Series.

Jimenez is an 18-year-old left-hander from the Dominican Republic. He made his professional debut with the Padres' Dominican Summer League affiliate earlier this year, where he tallied eight strikeouts with a 1.50 ERA over three starts.
