Orioles beat Yankees, clinch 2nd straight postseason berth
The Baltimore Orioles clinched a postseason berth Tuesday after beating the New York Yankees 5-3 and getting some help from the Minnesota Twins, who lost 4-1 to the Miami Marlins.
It's the first time the Orioles have made back-to-back playoff appearances since the 1996 and '97 seasons.
The celebration started in earnest in the visitor's clubhouse at Yankee Stadium following a speech by manager Brandon Hyde.
Twenty-year-old rookie Jackson Holliday, who's not yet of legal age, was gifted nonalcoholic champagne inside a birdbath.
Baltimore has struggled in the second half after entering the All-Star break with one of baseball's best records.
"The only people that believe in us is us, right? Everybody sees the struggles and wants to write the Orioles off," infielder Jordan Westburg said, according to MLB.com's Jake Rill.
"But we don't think about that, we don't talk about that. We're here to play ball every single day and play our best. … We believe in each other."
The Orioles join the Yankees, Cleveland Guardians, and Houston Astros on the American League side of the postseason.
