A's owner writes letter to fans ahead of final series in Oakland: 'We tried'
Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher wrote a letter to fans of the club ahead of the final series at the Oakland Coliseum.
"The A's are part of the fabric of Oakland, the East Bay, and the entire Bay Area," Fisher said, per Athletics reporter Jessica Kleinschmidt. "When Lew Wolff and I bought the team in 2005, our dream was to win world championships and build a new ballpark in Oakland. Over the next 18 years, we did our very best to make that happen."
The Athletics are set to move to Sacramento for the next three seasons ahead of the club's eventual settlement in Las Vegas.
"I know there is great disappointment, even bitterness," Fisher said. "Though I wish I could speak to each one of you individually, I can tell you this from the heart: We tried. Staying in Oakland was our goal, it was our mission, and we failed to achieve it. And for that, I am genuinely sorry."
The Athletics are hosting the Texas Rangers for a three-game series beginning Monday night.
Oakland's upcoming move will be the first in MLB since the Montreal Expos moved to Washington, D.C., to become the Nationals before the 2005 season.
