Jansen leaves Red Sox ahead of final series: 'He went home'
Kenley Jansen's season with the Boston Red Sox ended a few days earlier than expected.
The right-hander went home prior to the conclusion of the Red Sox season, with the organization replacing his locker and nameplate at Fenway Park ahead of its series with the Tampa Bay Rays.
"He went home," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said, according to MassLive's Chris Cotillo.
"I talked to him this week. As soon as it was over, two days ago, he wasn't going to pitch. There's other stuff we talked about, other stuff that's going on with him."
The pending free agent was placed on the injured list Sept. 23 with right shoulder inflammation, abruptly ending his second campaign with Boston.
Jansen recently expressed disappointment in how his Red Sox tenure turned out, explaining he wants to join a winner this offseason.
"I don't know what to say," Jansen said Sept. 14 before the Red Sox were eliminated from postseason contention, according to Cotillo.
"For me, I'm a guy who always wanted to make it to the playoffs. Where I came from, it was always titles. We fell short last year. This year, we're still in it, but for me, it's disappointing. That's who I am. You want to get to the playoffs and play for a championship."
Jansen spent two seasons with the Red Sox, saving 56 games with a 3.44 ERA and 10.3 K/9 in 105 outings.
The 36-year-old previously spent 12 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and one campaign with the Atlanta Braves. He made the playoffs in 10 of those seasons.
