Braves trade Soler to Angels for Canning

The Atlanta Braves traded outfielder Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels for right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning, the clubs announced Thursday.

Soler hit .241/.338/.442 with 21 home runs and 64 RBIs in 142 games split between the Braves and San Francisco Giants in 2024.

Atlanta acquired the 32-year-old from the Giants just before the trade deadline.

"We're going to be aggressive ... this is move No. 1," Angels general manager Perry Minasian said of the trade, according to The Athletic's Sam Blum. "We expect there to be more moves."

Minasian declined to provide specifics on how high the club's payroll could climb, citing it being on a "case-by-case" basis, Blum adds.

There's no money included in the deal, meaning Atlanta is off the hook for the $26 million it would have owed Soler over the next two seasons, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman.

Canning, 28, posted a 5.19 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 171 2/3 innings with the Angels in 2024. The righty will be a free agent in 2026.
