Report: Rival execs say Cubs want to trade Bellinger
The Chicago Cubs are interested in trading Cody Bellinger this winter, rival executives told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.
Bellinger is under contract for $27.5 million in 2025, which includes a $5-million buyout, so moving him will be difficult for the Cubs, Rosenthal adds.
The 2019 National League MVP could be a fit for teams that miss out on signing fellow outfielder Juan Soto, according to Rosenthal, who mentions the New York Yankees as a possible landing spot for Bellinger if Soto doesn't return.
The 29-year-old Bellinger opted into his 2025 salary instead of testing the free-agent market after slashing .266/.325/.426 with 18 home runs and 78 RBIs.
Those numbers were solid but nowhere near as impressive as what Bellinger accomplished in 2023 when he posted an .881 OPS with 26 homers, 97 RBIs, and 20 steals for the Cubs.
Chicago has been active this offseason after missing the playoffs. The club traded for reliever Eli Morgan and catcher Matt Thaiss while designating former closer Adbert Alzolay for assignment.
