The New York Mets and right-hander Frankie Montas agreed to a two-year contract worth $34 million, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The contract also contains an opt-out, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Montas posted a 7-11 record with a 4.84 ERA and 148 strikeouts across 150 2/3 innings with the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers last season. The 31-year-old saw his numbers improve after a trade to Milwaukee, striking out 11 batters per nine innings in 11 starts. He owns a 4.09 ERA with 9.2 K/9 during nine MLB seasons.

Montas' splitter was particularly effective in 2024 as he held opposing hitters to a .218 batting average with a 42.6% whiff rate with the pitch.

Montas will step into a Mets rotation looking to potentially replace free agents Sean Manaea and Luis Severino.

New York is currently projected to begin the 2025 campaign with a rotation that includes Montas, Kodai Senga, David Peterson, Paul Blackburn, and Tylor Megill.
