Report: Yankees, Cubs have discussed Bellinger trade

The Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees have had discussions about a trade that would send former NL MVP Cody Bellinger to the Bronx, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

While there was a bit of progress in talks Wednesday, no deal is imminent, Heyman reports.

The main issue appears to be regarding money. Chicago wants the Yankees to assume most of Bellinger's remaining contract, while New York has been asking for the Cubs to include cash in any deal, according to Heyman.

Bellinger chose not to opt out earlier this offseason. He's owed $52.5 million over the final two years of his contract and has another player option next winter.

The 29-year-old wasn't able to replicate his comeback 2023 season with the Cubs this past year, hitting .266/.325/.426 with 18 homers and 78 RBIs over 130 games. Chicago reportedly made Bellinger and outfielder Seiya Suzuki available this winter and is apparently trying to move at least one of them.

Bellinger could be a good fit for the middle of the Yankees' lineup as a left-handed power bat who could potentially rebound hitting into Yankee Stadium's short porch. He also plays plus defense at center field and first base, two positions where New York is looking for upgrades.

In addition to their apparent trade talks with one another, the Yankees and Cubs are said to be pushing hard to acquire Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker.
