Report: Mutual interest between Bregman, Tigers
Alex Bregman could find himself playing for the team that knocked him out of the playoffs last season.
The Detroit Tigers are in ongoing discussions with Bregman, a source told Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit doesn't want to spend $200 million to acquire his services, however, per the source.
Scott Boras, Bregman's agent, suggested his client would be interested in joining the up-and-coming Tigers.
"I think he's open to any team that he thinks is someone that can be competitive and kind of dawn a new age similar to the one he had in Houston," Boras said, according to Petzold.
Bregman played several seasons under Tigers manager A.J. Hinch when the pair was together with the Houston Astros. He also played with Chris Chinea, Detroit's bullpen catcher, at LSU.
"Obviously, he knows some people in Detroit very, very well and has very familiar and trusting relationships there," Boras said.
The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are reportedly among other teams in the mix for Bregman, who could be the next big free agent to sign, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.
The incumbent Astros also reportedly offered Bregman a six-year, $156-million contract to stick around.
The two-time All-Star hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs last season. He also won the American League Gold Glove at third base.
