Yankees ship Trevino to Reds for 2 players
The New York Yankees traded catcher Jose Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds for reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson, the clubs announced Friday.
Trevino has spent the last three years with the Yankees after starting his career with the Texas Rangers.
The 32-year-old hit .215/.288/.354 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs in 73 games in 2024. His best season came in 2022 when he rode a strong first half to his first and only All-Star appearance.
Trevino graded well defensively behind the dish in 2024 and should be a boon to Cincinnati's young pitching staff. He ranked in the 88th percentile for blocks above average and in the 95th percentile for framing.
He's slated for free agency at the end of the 2025 campaign.
Cruz posted a 4.86 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with a 14.7 K/9 in 69 appearances with the Reds last season. There may be room for growth, however, as his career 3.06 FIP is nearly a run-and-a-half lower than his career 4.52 ERA.
Jackson, meanwhile, never appeared for the Reds as he was signed to a minor-league deal earlier this offseason. The five-year MLB veteran owns a career .456 OPS (27 OPS+) and minus-0.8 fWAR.
