Report: Mets re-sign Manaea to 3-year, $75M deal
The New York Mets are bringing back left-handed starter Sean Manaea on a three-year, $75-million contract, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports.
Manaea's deal contains $23.25 million in deferred money, a source told Will Sammon of The Athletic. The deferrals will be paid out annually in equal amounts over 10 years beginning in 2035.
The 32-year-old authored a 3.47 ERA and 3.83 FIP over 181 2/3 innings last year while making 32 starts and garnering down-ballot Cy Young consideration.
Manaea originally joined the Mets on a two-year, $28-million contract last winter. He exercised an opt-out at the beginning of this offseason that cut the deal short.
New York then tendered him a $21.05-million qualifying offer, which was also declined. As a result, if Manaea signed elsewhere, the Mets would've recouped draft-pick compensation.
Manaea owns a 4.00 ERA and 4.01 FIP over his nine-year career, making 198 starts and 30 relief appearances. He broke into MLB with the Oakland Athletics and has also had one-year stints with the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
