Report: Tigers still pursuing Bregman despite gap in negotiations

The Detroit Tigers may not be done adding talent.

Detroit remains in negotiations with free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman despite a gap in perceived value between the two sides, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press.

The Tigers have been unwilling to meet Bregman's $200-million asking price, but notable progress has been made over the last month, Petzold adds.

Detroit made a splash Friday when the team reportedly agreed to a one-year, $15-million deal with Gleyber Torres. He's expected to become the team's everyday second baseman.

The Houston Astros, Bregman's old team, were thought to be a serious contender to retain him before negotiations stalled. They pivoted to signing Christian Walker and trading for Isaac Paredes.

Bregman is coming off another strong season ahead of his age-31 campaign. He won his first career Gold Glove at third base while hitting .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 76 RBIs in 2024.

He accrued at least 4.1 fWAR for the third straight year.

Third base remains a question mark for the up-and-coming Tigers. Jace Jung and Matt Vierling are currently penciled in to split time at the position, although Vierling can also play the outfield.
