Report: A's hand Rooker 5-year, $60M extension

The Athletics and slugger Brent Rooker agreed to a five-year extension worth $60 million, a source told The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Rooker's deal reportedly contains a vesting option that can take the contract to $90 million over six years.

The move halts trade speculation that followed the 30-year-old into the offseason. Rooker bashed 69 home runs over the past two seasons, making him a premier power threat and an intriguing trade chip for the typically frugal Athletics.

Rooker has blossomed with the A's after bouncing around the majors early in his career. He earned an All-Star selection in 2023 and a Silver Slugger award in 2024. A's general manager David Forst said in November that he wouldn't move Rooker, who carried three years of arbitration eligibility.

An outfielder by trade, Rooker has settled in as the Athletics' everyday designated hitter.

The A's have had an unusually busy offseason, signing Luis Severino to a big-money contract in free agency before making other moves for Jeffrey Springs and Gio Urshela.

The AL West club is looking to claw its way back into contention on the heels of three straight seasons with fewer than 70 wins. The A's will play the next three seasons in Sacramento while awaiting a stadium in Las Vegas, which will become their new permanent home.
