The New York Mets want a decision from free agent Pete Alonso as soon as possible.

The Mets let the first baseman's camp know they need an answer about a deal in the near future so they have enough time to pivot to different options before spring training, reports the New York Post's Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman.

Alonso and the Mets are making progress on a deal, which is believed to be for three years and include at least one opt-out, but nothing was agreed to as of Wednesday, according to Heyman and Sherman.

New York has already discussed the possibility of other free agents taking reps at first base if a deal cannot be reached with the four-time All-Star, sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Alternative options are unknown, but the Mets reportedly checked in with the Toronto Blue Jays about the availability of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Blue Jays are also one of three teams engaged in conversations with Alonso about a deal, sources told Will Sammon and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Alonso is one of the top remaining free agents after he hit 34 home runs with 88 RBIs and a .788 OPS (123 OPS+) for the Mets last season.
