The San Diego Padres traded cash to the Chicago White Sox for relief pitcher Ron Marinaccio, the clubs announced Friday.
Chicago designated Marinaccio for assignment Tuesday to make room on the 40-man roster for free-agent signing Martín Pérez. The White Sox claimed Marinaccio off waivers from the New York Yankees in September.
He spent the last three seasons pitching out of the bullpen in New York. The 29-year-old recorded a 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 25 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings in 2024 before being cut loose.
The righty's best showing came in 2022 when he pitched to a 2.05 ERA (193 ERA+) with a 11.5 K/9 in 40 appearances as a rookie.
San Diego's had a quiet offseason and needed bullpen help following the departure of Tanner Scott, who signed a four-year, $72-million contract with NL West rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers.
