Angels' Rendon needs hip surgery, will be out long term
Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Miniasian said third baseman Anthony Rendon needs hip surgery and will be out "long term," according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register.
Rendon appeared in just 57 games for the Angels in 2024. He hit just .218/.307/.267 with no home runs and 14 RBIs, posting the lowest OPS (.574) and OPS+ (66) of his career.
The oft-injured 34-year-old has played in just 257 of a possible 810 games since joining the Angels on a seven-year, $245-million contract. He's still owed roughly $77 million through 2026.
Beyond not living up to his hefty contract, Rendon has also drawn the ire of Angels fans for his off-the-field comments. He made headlines last February when he said baseball has "never been a top priority" in his life.
Rendon also said in September that it was "hard to say" whether or not he could ever recapture his pre-injury form.
The former star came to Los Angeles fresh off the best season of his career with the Washington Nationals in 2019. He led the National League with 44 doubles and 126 RBIs that season.
Rendon hasn't recorded an OPS+ above 100 since 2020.
