The Chicago Cubs traded outfielder Alexander Canario to the New York Mets for cash considerations, the teams announced Monday.

Canario was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Feb. 20 to make room on the 40-man roster for Justin Turner.

The 24-year-old was once a promising prospect in Chicago's farm system. He put together a terrific 2022 campaign in which he slashed .252/.343/.556 with 37 home runs, 97 RBIs, and 23 steals across various minor-league levels.

He regressed the past two seasons but still posted an .844 OPS in 2023 followed by an .850 OPS in 64 Triple-A games last season.

Canario has also appeared in 21 big-league contests, hitting two homers and eight RBIs with 19 strikeouts in 45 plate appearances.

The Mets placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.
