Mets sign Ureña to minor-league deal

The New York Mets and veteran right-hander José Ureña agreed to a minor-league deal, Ureña told Newsday's Tim Healey.

He'll make $2 million if he cracks the MLB roster with an additional $750,000 in performance bonuses, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Ureña posted a 5-8 record with a 3.80 ERA and 5.8 K/9 across 33 appearances (nine starts) for the Texas Rangers last season.

The 33-year-old has extensive experience as a starting pitcher, making 152 starts over 10 MLB seasons. Ureña is best remembered for a six-year stint with the Miami Marlins that included a pair of Opening Day starts in 2018 and 2019.

The hurler gives Mets manager Carlos Mendoza another potential option in the rotation as the club navigates injuries to right-hander Frankie Montas and left-hander Sean Manaea.

Montas is dealing with a lat strain he suffered during his initial bullpen session, while Manaea is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season with a right oblique injury.
