Report: Padres, Iglesias agree to minor-league contract

The San Diego Padres signed veteran infielder Jose Iglesias to a minor-league contract that includes an invite to spring training, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Iglesias gets paid $3 million if he makes the major-league roster and can earn an extra $1 million in incentives, Heyman reports.

Iglesias, 35, enjoyed a career revitalization with the New York Mets in 2024. He slashed .337/.381/.448 with 16 doubles in 85 games while posting his career-best OPS+ (137) in a campaign in which he made at least 200 plate appearances.

He also made headlines for kick-starting the Mets' 'OMG' movement, named after his song of the same title. It became the soundtrack to the team's second-half surge that ended in an NLCS appearance.

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos said he believed Iglesias deserved to win NL MVP during the offseason.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said in early February that the club would not re-sign Iglesias even though he seemingly wanted to return, citing a greater need for roster flexibility.

Iglesias owns a .710 OPS (91 OPS+) through 12 MLB seasons.
