Mets' Alvarez out 6-8 weeks after fracturing wrist bone
New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez needs surgery and will miss six-to-eight weeks after fracturing the hamate bone in his left wrist, manager Carlos Mendoza told SNY on Sunday.
"It's a big blow when your starting catcher goes down, but guys will step up," Mendoza said, according to SNY.
The 23-year-old backstop sustained the injury Saturday during live batting practice.
Mendoza said the Mets feel good about their other catchers, but he anticipates the front office will look outside the organization for potential fits during Alvarez's absence.
The Mets have Luis Torrens on the 40-man roster, with backstops Jakson Reetz, Kevin Parada, Hayden Senger, and Chris Williams in camp as non-roster invites.
Alvarez slashed .237/.307/.403 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs in 100 games last season after belting 25 homers with a .721 OPS in 2023.
