The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a one-year deal with veteran reliever Phil Maton, the team announced Thursday.

The contract pays Maton $2 million, sources told Katie Woo of The Athletic. It's the first major-league pact the Cardinals have awarded a player since last season ended.

Maton, 31, made 71 appearances in 2024 split between the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets.

The righty struggled to begin the year but excelled after being traded to New York. He worked to a 2.51 ERA (159 ERA+) and 0.84 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings for the Mets down the stretch.

Maton has also pitched for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, and Cleveland Guardians throughout his eight MLB campaigns.

He owns a 4.16 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 411 career innings.
