Williams: 'Haven't felt like 100% myself' with Yankees so far
New York Yankees closer Devin Williams is searching for answers amid a rocky start with his new team.
"I haven't felt like 100% myself up to this point, but I would say I'm getting closer," Williams said after being pulled in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers, per SNY.
The righty's ERA ballooned to 12.00 after allowing three earned runs against Detroit. He was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr., who recorded the final out of the game to nail down the win for the Yankees.
Williams surrendered a walk-off single in extra innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his previous appearance on April 6.
"I'm confident this is going to be a distant memory as we continue to move forward," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.
"(Williams is) not far off. Just a little better strike-throwing. Once he starts doing that and dictating counts, then you're going to see it because his stuff is not far off. This is his fourth outing. He'll be fine, he'll get through this. Just early part of the season."
The Yankees acquired Williams during the offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for starting pitcher Nestor Cortes. He pitched to a sparkling 1.25 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 22 appearances in 2024.
Williams is a two-time All-Star with 69 career saves.
