Greene's 3-run homer off Morton helps Tigers sweep doubleheader from Orioles

DETROIT (AP) — Riley Greene hit a three-run homer in the second game that helped sent Charlie Morton to his sixth straight loss, and the Detroit Tigers swept a doubleheader from the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 and 6-2 on Saturday.

After Gunnar Henderson’s RBI double off Keider Montero put Baltimore ahead in the third, but left fielder Zach McKinstry prevented a second run by throwing out Cedric Mullins at the plate.

Greene hit his fourth homer of the season in the bottom half on a fastball from Morton (0-6), who replaced Keegan Akin in the second and allowed three runs, three hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. Morton leads the major leagues in losses.

Detroit is 7-2 on its homestand.

Baltimore has lost five of six and dropped to 1-4 on its trip.

GUARDIANS 5, RED SOX 4, 1ST GAME

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jarren Duran had Boston’s first straight steal of home since Jacoby Ellsbury exactly 16 years earlier, and the Red Sox beat Cleveland for a doubleheader split after losing the opener 5-4.

Duran tripled in the third inning and took off against Doug Nikhazy (0-1), a 25-year-old left-hander who was making made his major league debut.

As Nikhazy went from the windup, Duran broke for home, slid headfirst and slapped his right hand on the plate ahead of Bo Naylor’s tag. Umpire Brock Ballou’s safe call was upheld in a video review.

Ellsbury had Boston’s previous straight steal of home against the New York Yankees’ Andy Pettitte on April 26, 2009.

Duran stole home for the third time in his big league career. He also had three hits and two RBIs.

TWINS 5, ANGELS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ty France doubled, singled and drove in a run as Minnesota matched its season high with 13 hits and beat Los Angeles for its fourth win in five games.

Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel bruised his right knee when he fouled off a pitch in the fourth inning and needed assistance when he left the field. He was replaced by a pinch hitter.

Carlos Correa had two singles and two RBIs, while Brock Lee had a single, a double and drove in a run.

Simeon Woods Richardson (2-2) gave up one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts, Four pitchers combined on one-hit relief

After taking two of three from the Chicago White Sox and winning the first two games against the Angels, the Twins have consecutive series victories for the first time since last Aug. 12-18.

Zach Neto had three hits including a home run and had a career-best three stolen bases for the Angels, who have lost four of five.

Yusei Kikuchi (0-4) lost his fifth straight decision, giving up four runs, nine hits and four walks in two-plus innings with no strikeouts. Kikuchi failed to record an out in the third inning for the first time in six starts this year.

CARDINALS 6, BREWERS 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado homered off Trevor Megill in the ninth inning, giving St. Louis a win over Milwaukee after the Cardinals wasted a five-run lead.

Ryan Helsley (1-0) entered with a 5-3 advantage but blew a save for the second time in six chances. Isaac Collins singled leading off the ninth and Jackson Chourio, who had four hits and three RBIs, followed with his sixth homer on a first-pitch slider.

Arenado hit his third home run of the season in the bottom half on a 97.8 mph fastball from Megill (0-2).

St. Louis won consecutive games for the first time since April 13-14.

Milwaukee has lost four in a row.

Cardinals starter Sonny Gray allowed three runs, seven hits and three walks in six innings.

Brewers starter Quinn Priester gave up five runs, eight hits and three walks in five innings.

REDS 6, ROCKIES 4

DENVER (AP) — Noel Marte hit a two-run homer, Austin Hays added a pair of solo drives and Cincinnati beat Colorado to send the Rockies to their 13th loss in 14 games.

Colorado lost its fifth game in a row and is 4-22, the worst 26-game start in franchise history. The Rockies have been outscored by 62 runs. The next-worst differential in the major leagues is the Chicago White Sox at minus-31.

Hunter Greene (3-2) struck out eight, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings.

Emilio Pagán got his second save of the series and seventh in eight chances. He allowed a two-out RBI double in the ninth to Adael Amador on a ball that skipped past center fielder TJ Friedl, then struck out Brenton Doyle.

Friedl had three hits for the Reds, who have won three in a row after losing five of seven. Marte has 12 hits and 12 RBIs in 27 at-bats since April 20.

Michael Toglia and Amador homered for Colorado. It was the first big league homer for the 22-year-old Amador, who had three hits and two RBIs.

METS 2, NATIONALS 0

WASHINGTON (AP) — Francisco Alvarez hit a two-run homer in his second game after returning from a broken hand, and Clay Holmes combined with five relievers on New YorkS’ fifth shutout of the season, a win over Washington.

Francisco Lindor had three hits and raised his average to .314 as the Mets won for the eighth time in nine games and set a team record for April wins with 17.

Holmes (3-1) allowed four hits in five innings and struck out two without a walk. A.J. Minter left because of triceps tightness after a 3-1 pitch to James Wood in the eighth and Max Kranick relieved with no advance warmup time for the second time in four days, getting the last two outs of the inning.

Edwin Díaz struck out three around a walk in the ninth to remain perfect in seven save chances. It was his first appearance since a left hip cramp forced him from Wednesday’s game against Philadelphia, when Kranick replaced him.

New York’s five shutouts are second behind San Diego’s seven.

Luis Garcia, Jr. and Dylan Crews had two hits each for the Nationals, who had won five of seven.

GIANTS 3, RANGERS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pinch-hitter Patrick Bailey singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, and San Francisco overcame a two-run deficit to beat Texas.

Willy Adames hit a two-run single in the fifth, ending Tyler Mahler’s career-best 20-inning scoreless streak.

With the score 2-2, Heliot Ramos singled off Jacob Webb (2-1) starting the ninth, LaMonte Wade Jr. walked and Christian Koss sacrificed. The switch-hitting Bailey batted for Sam Huff, left-hander Jacob Lentz relieved and Bailey, who entered with a .159 average, slapped a first-pitch changeup to the opposite field in short right as Ramos trotted home.

Ryan Walker (1-1) escaped a two-on, no-outs jam in the ninth. Kyle Higashioka popped up a bunt attempt caught by Huff, the catcher, in foul territory and then Walker struck out Josh Smith and pinch-hitter Joc Pederson.

Robbie Ray struck out eight in seven innings, allowing five hits and retiring 14 of his final 15 batters.

PHILLIES 10, CUBS 4

CHICAGO (AP) — Jesús Luzardo pitched six effective innings, and Philadelphia stopped a five-game slide with a victory over Chicago.

Luzardo (3-0) allowed two unearned runs and three hits in his first win since April 4. The left-hander has yielded two runs or fewer in five of his first six starts.

Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Max Kepler each had two RBIs for Philadelphia, which scored a total of 13 runs during its losing streak. Bryson Stott had two hits and scored twice on a blustery afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Chicago had won three in a row and five of six overall on an eight-game homestand. The NL Central leaders left 10 runners on base.

WHITE SOX 10, ATHLETICS 3

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Michael A. Taylor hit three doubles and drove in three runs, Luis Robert Jr. homered and the Chicago White Sox beat the Athletics 10-3 on Saturday.

Chicago, which had lost 10 of 12 coming in, scored four times in the first and twice more in the second off Jeffrey Springs (3-3).

After Tyler Gilbert pitched a hitless first as an opener, Jonathan Cannon (1-3) allowed three runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

The A’s dropped to 5-9 at Sutter Health Park, their temporary home for at least three seasons.

ROYALS 2, ASTROS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Wacha scattered four hits over six innings, Vinnie Pasquantino homered and Kansas City beat Houston for the second straight night to run their winning streak to six.

Wacha (1-3) once again received little run support, but the veteran right-hander made the meager production stand up on chilly evening at Kauffman Stadium. He struck out six while walking two and never allowed a runner past second base.

Steven Cruz worked the seventh for Kansas City, his seventh appearance this season without allowing a run. John Schreiber left runners on the corners in the eighth, and Carlos Estévez had a perfect ninth for his seventh save.

Bobby Witt Jr. doubled and scored in the first inning for the Royals, extending his career-best hitting streak to 18 games.

BRAVES 8, DIAMONDBACKS 7, 10 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) — Matt Olson scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning and Atlanta overcame Eugenio Suárez’s four home runs to beat Arizona.

Suárez became the 19th player in major league history to hit four homers in a game, but it wasn’t enough for the Diamondbacks, who dropped their fourth straight.

Suarez’s fourth homer — off closer Raisel Iglesias (1-2) — tied it at 7 in the ninth, but Atlanta rebounded in the 10th when reliever Justin Martinez (1-1) uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Olson to score easily.

Michael Harris II’s two-run double was the big blow. Arizona center fielder Alek Thomas misjudged the hard-hit liner, moving in a few steps before realizing the ball was over his head. He almost recovered to catch it, but couldn’t quite make the play. Sean Murphy and Ozzie Albies scored to make it 7-6.

Suárez’s first three homers were a solo shot in the second, a two-run homer in the fourth and another solo shot in the sixth — all off Atlanta starter Grant Holmes.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly gave up two runs over six innings. Holmes gave up six runs over 5 2/3 innings.

RAYS 4, PADRES 1

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Ryan Pepiot allowed just three hits in six innings and Brandon Lowe homered for Tampa Bay, who beat San Diego for their season-best fourth straight win.

Pepiot (2-3) extended the Padres’ scoreless streak to 30 innings before Tyler Wade tripled to center leading off the sixth and scored on Fernando Tatis Jr.’s one-out single to center. Wade’s fly ball fell just in front of the glove of diving center fielder Chandler Simpson and rolled almost to the warning track. Gavin Sheets then grounded into a double play.

Pepiot struck out three and walked two. Four of the five runners he put on were erased on the basepaths. He and three relievers combined on a five-hitter, with Pete Fairbanks pitching the ninth for his fifth save.

The Padres avoided a third straight shutout. They hadn’t scored since the second inning of a 2-0 win at Detroit on Tuesday, and then lost 6-0 to the Tigers on Wednesday and 1-0 to the Rays on Friday night in the series opener.

DODGERS 8, PIRATES 4

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Teoscar Hernández lined a tiebreaking homer to left field to lead off the eighth inning, Shohei Ohtani had a triple and two doubles, and Los Angeles beat Pittsburgh to snap a three-game skid.

After Hernández took Colin Holderman (0-1) deep, pinch-hitter Kiké Hernández followed with a three-run home run against Joey Wentz, the eighth pinch homer of his career.

The Pirates went ahead on 4-3 in the seventh on Bryan Reynolds’ RBI grounder. The Dodgers tied it in the bottom half on Ohtani’s run-scoring double. Kirby Yates (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth.

Oneil Cruz smacked Dodgers right-hander Roki Sasaki’s first pitch of the game over the center-field wall for his eighth homer of the season.

MARINERS 14, MARLINS 0

SEATTLE (AP) — Julio Rodriguez and Jorge Polanco led off with back-to-back home runs in Seattle’s six-run first inning and Polanco connected again in the fourth in a 14-0 victory over Miami.

Right-hander Luis Castillo (3-2) allowed just one hit over six innings. He had five strikeouts and walked two.

Rodriguez homered off Connor Gillispie’s first pitch, a 417-foot shot that hit foul pole in left. Polanco homered on the third pitch.

After Gillispie (0-3) loaded the bases with just one out, rookie Ben Williamson and Miles Mastrobuoni hit two-run doubles to make it 6-0.

Seattle added another run the second on Luke Raley’s sacrifice fly. Gillispie went two innings, allowing seven runs on six hits.
