The Washington Nationals and veteran reliever Andrew Chafin agreed to a one-year contract, the club announced Thursday.
Chafin became a free agent after exercising his opt-out of a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers.
He posted a 2.13 ERA with 17 strikeouts across 12 2/3 innings at Triple-A this season.
Chafin will take Colin Poche's roster spot after the Nationals designated the left-handed reliever for assignment.
The 34-year-old owns a 3.42 ERA and 9.8 K/9 in 11 MLB seasons with the Tigers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Athletics, Texas Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers.
