Bregman: Choosing Red Sox in free agency 'wasn't a diss of Detroit'

Alex Bregman has no issues with the city of Detroit or the Tigers after choosing the Boston Red Sox over them in free agency.

"It wasn't a diss of Detroit," Bregman said Monday, according to Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News. "I made the decision to come play for the Boston Red Sox, and I'm super excited to be here playing for this ballclub."

In February, Bregman signed a three-year, $120-million contract with the Red Sox that included two opt-outs instead of inking a deal with the Tigers, who reportedly offered him a six-year, $171.5-million pact. The opt-outs allow Bregman two chances to enter free agency if he chooses, and his Red Sox deal comes with a higher annual average salary.

Tigers fans let Bregman know they were displeased with his decision Monday, booing the third baseman in his first at-bat at Comerica Park. The 31-year-old expected the rude welcome, which didn't phase him as he reached base twice during Boston's 14-2 loss to Detroit.

"It is what it is, and it's part of it," Bregman said. "I'm just super happy to be able to be playing the game of baseball at this level and playing against a great team. It's always fun to compete.

"It's all good. It wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last time I've been booed before in my life."

Bregman has been terrific, slashing .309/.388/.564 with nine home runs and 31 RBIs for a Red Sox club that's one game over .500 following Monday's loss.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are tied with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers for the major-league lead in wins with 27.
