Orioles' Hyde 'frustrated as anybody' amid club's ongoing struggles
Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde is feeling the weight of his team's struggles as the losses continue piling up.
"I'm as frustrated as anybody, and I try not to show that to the team," he said, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN. "I think there's (an) appropriate time to show that to the team, but I also try to be as consistent as I can, as well."
The Orioles lost 4-3 to the Washington Nationals on Friday night after allowing a late lead to slip away. It was their ninth loss in their last 11 games.
It's been a shockingly poor 15-28 start for a team that entered the season with World Series aspirations after winning 91 games in 2024 and making consecutive playoff appearances.
Hyde believes he's done his best to hold his players accountable and wants them to know he has their backs.
"Now, there are times when things haven't gone real well where we have addressed it, and firmly," he said. "But it's still a long season, these guys need our support. I want to be there to support them in any way that I possibly can."
Catcher Adley Rutschman is among several Orioles hitters scuffling for an offense that ranks 12th in the American League in runs scored (159). The two-time All-Star owns a .654 OPS (90 OPS+) this season.
The Orioles' pitching, meanwhile, is the only staff in baseball that's been worth negative fWAR this season (minus-0.2). The group also holds the worst ERA (5.33) and FIP (5.04) in the AL.
Baltimore is already 10.5 games back of the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East division standings.
