San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman will miss more than 10 games with a sprained right hand, the infielder told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

"It sucks because we just won five games in a row, we're starting to get some momentum going, and I felt like I was really starting to put together some really good at-bats," Chapman said.

The 32-year-old jammed his hand against first base while diving back to the bag during a pick-off attempt Sunday.

Chapman had an MRI on Monday that showed sprained ligaments, according to Slusser. He hopes to return to the Giants lineup before the end of the first half after being placed on the injured list.

The five-time Gold Glove winner was slashing .243/.360/.452 with 12 home runs and 30 RBIs in 65 games while playing his typical brand of elite defense at the hot corner.

Chapman is in the first year of a six-year, $151-million extension he signed with the Giants in September.

The Giants are starting Casey Schmitt at third against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.
