Toronto Blue Jays outfielder George Springer managed to avoid a major injury after taking an accidental knee to the neck from Jazz Chisholm Jr. during his team's 5-4 win over the New York Yankees.
Springer's throat slammed into Chisholm's knee while he slid into third base in the bottom of Monday's sixth inning, causing his neck to jerk backward violently. Springer appeared to be coughing and was slow to get up while trainers tended to him before going straight into the clubhouse and leaving the game.
Manager John Schneider said postgame that Springer "is fine" and "should be good" to play in Tuesday's Canada Day matinee, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. Schneider added that the 35-year-old was removed from the game as a precaution because he was having trouble breathing.
Andrés Giménez entered the game in Springer's spot in the lineup to start the top of the seventh while playing second base. Nathan Lukes, who made a plate appearance as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth, took over for Springer in right field, while Davis Schneider moved from second to left.
Springer is enjoying a renaissance season for the Blue Jays, hitting .263/.360/.459 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs over 78 games in 2025.
