Report: Mets have interest in Marlins ace Alcantara
The New York Mets have checked in with the Miami Marlins about a trade for ace Sandy Alcantara, reports Mike Puma of the New York Post.
It's unclear how advanced talks with Miami may be. The Marlins' asking price for the former NL Cy Young winner is high, Puma adds.
Alcantara has struggled in 2025 after missing last season to recover from Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old owns a 6.66 ERA and 1.43 WHIP while allowing 13 home runs over 104 innings. Still, he's shown flashes of his award-winning self, most recently in a dominant seven-inning start against the San Diego Padres earlier this week.
Alcantara is under contract through the 2026 campaign and would come with a $21-million club option for 2027. He's earning $17 million this year.
The Mets know Alcantara well from their divisional battles over the last few years. This past April, Mets players openly mused about adding the two-time All-Star to their rotation, with shortstop Francisco Lindor even comparing Alcantara's potential impact on the team to that of Juan Soto.
New York is hoping to shore up a battered starting rotation before next week's deadline. While Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas have both finally made their season debuts, the club has already lost Griffin Canning for the remainder of the campaign and currently has four starters on the IL.
The Mets added some pitching on Friday, acquiring reliever Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles for two prospects.
The Chicago Cubs and Padres have reportedly also shown interest in trading for Alcantara.
