Angels' Jansen wants to pitch 'at least 4 more years'
Los Angeles Angels closer Kenley Jansen has no intention of retiring anytime soon and has an end date in mind for when he wants to finish his career.
"My goal is at least four more years after this season," Jansen said, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. "That's my goal."
Jansen leads active Major League Baseball pitchers with 467 career saves. He needs 12 more to pass Lee Smith for third on the all-time leaderboard behind Mariano Rivera (652) and Trevor Hoffman (601).
The 37-year-old continues to pitch well late into his career like Rivera and Hoffman, authoring a 2.79 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 45 games for the Angels.
Jansen said he believes he could pitch even better next season if he gets into the type of shape he wants.
"I'm going to put the work in this offseason to get my body in better shape," Jansen said.
"Last year, I spent the majority of time with my mom because of how sick she was. I didn't work as much in the offseason. This offseason, I'm definitely dedicating that to her and also to myself, to get in the best shape I can get."
Jansen admitted he's unsure if the Angels will want him back next year, but added that he'll try to make the decision easier for them by continuing to perform well.
"I can't predict," Jansen said.
"I know what I can do for this season to help. Unfortunately, those decisions are not in my hands. One thing I learned is both sides have to like each other to have each other in the future."
