Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya suffered a left ankle sprain after awkwardly tumbling over first base while trying to beat a throw in the eighth inning, manager Craig Counsell said postgame.

Amaya immediately fell to the ground in pain and had his lower left leg attended to by medical staff before being carted off the field. Counsell added that X-rays were negative.

"It's swollen up pretty good already - it's an IL (stint)," Counsell told Marquee Sports Network. "It's bad luck, unfortunately. We're gonna miss him."

Amaya was playing in his first game since May 24 after the Cubs activated him from the 60-day injured list Tuesday. The 26-year-old had been sidelined with an oblique strain.
