Dodgers' Roberts: Hernández's defense has 'got to get better'

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was not impressed with the defense of outfielder Teoscar Hernández during Monday's 4-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

With the game tied at three in the ninth inning, Hernández was unable to catch a fly ball off the bat of Ezequiel Tovar, who advanced to second base on the misplay. He'd later score the winning run on Warming Bernabel's walk-off hit.

"He's got to get better out there," Roberts said postgame, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya.

"There's just no way to put it. I know there's effort – it's not a lack of effort. But the thing is, we've just got to get better. We do."

Hernández discussed his inability to make the game-changing play following the loss.

"We were playing no doubles, and like you said, it's a big outfield. I was really far and tried to make a play. I didn't, it came off my glove unfortunately. Things happen. I've just got to wash it and keep moving forward," he said, according to Dodger Blue.

Hernández, who signed a three-year, $66-million contract to return to the Dodgers in January, has been one of the worst defensive outfielders in baseball for a second straight season, according to Baseball Savant's fielding run value.
