Army helmet worn by Jonny Gomes a gift from war vet
Boston Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes doesn't just celebrate wearing an Army helmet for show, it actually has significant meaning.
The helmet belonged to Sgt. Miguel Chacon who gave it to Gomes as a gift in September as a thank you, after Gomes handed him a pair of batting gloves when signing some autographs in June.
Bob Reinert of USAG-Natick Public Affairs reported that Chacon wanted to give Gomes the helmet because he is incredibly patriotic. He has a tattoo on his leg that includes "an American Flag, the Statue of Liberty and a target with the date Osama big Laden was Killed."
Chacon, who wore the helmet in combat, said he feels a sense of pride every time he sees Gomes wear it.
"It's an honor to see him wear that," said Chacon, adding that Gomes, in turn, "honors the military. That's bigger than anything. I'm glad it's getting them through the battle that they're battling through right now to win the World Series."
