Raleigh and Canzone's home run spree powers Mariners to 10th straight win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit a pair of homers to match the Seattle season record set by Ken Griffey Jr., Dominic Canzone belted a career-best three homers of his own, and the AL West-leading Mariners routed the fading Kansas City Royals 12-5 on Tuesday night for their 10th consecutive win.

Raleigh’s first homer, a 419-foot shot off Michael Wacha while batting left-handed, gave him 55 on the season, breaking the record for a switch-hitter set by Yankees great Mickey Mantle in 1961. Raleigh’s second shot, a 425-footer off Daniel Lynch IV as he batted right-handed, tied the club mark that Griffey set during the 1997 season and matched the following year.

It was the 10th multihomer game this season for “The Big Dumper” and the 20th of Raleigh’s career. The All-Star catcher also doubled in the first inning and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs, giving him 118 on the year.

Canzone homered in the second inning, the fifth and the ninth on a hot, humid, late-summer night in which balls were sailing out of spacious Kauffman Stadium. The designated hitter also had a pair of singles to finish 5 for 5 with four RBIs.

Carter Jensen hit the first two homers of his big league career for Kansas City. It looked as if he had a third before his long fly ball in the eighth inning bounced off the right-field wall for a double.

Logan Gilbert (5-6) allowed two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out five for Seattle.

CUBS 4, PIRATES 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Michael Busch greeted Paul Skenes with the fourth leadoff home run of his career and Chicago moved to the brink of its first playoff berth in five years with a victory over Pittsburgh.

The Cubs winnowed their magic number to one by chasing Skenes (10-10) during a rare rocky outing for the NL Cy Young Award favorite. Busch led off with his 29th homer of the season, a shot to the final row of seats above the Clemente Wall in right field, and finished with three hits as Chicago won for the sixth time in seven games.

Nico Hoerner added three hits and Carson Kelly, Dansby Swanson and Mosies Ballesteros had two apiece for the Cubs in support of starter Cade Horton (11-4), who bolstered his NL Rookie of the Year credentinals by limiting the Pirates to one run over five innings. The 24-year-old right-hander is 8-1 with a 0.92 ERA since the All-Star break.

Brad Keller worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save.

ATHLETICS 2, RED SOX 1

BOSTON (AP) — Brett Harris had a go-ahead single in a two-run sixth inning and the Athletics rallied to beat Boston for its first five-game winning streak in over a year.

Tyler Soderstrom had two hits and an RBI double for the Athletics, on their longest winning streak since six in a row from April 28 to May 4 last season.

Boston dropped into the third AL wild card, a half-game behind Houston and two games behind the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox went ahead in the third when Rob Refsnyder scored from first when Carlos Narváez doubled to left-center and the ball deflected Lawrence Butler for an error as the center fielder tried to scoop it.

Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs allowed an unearned run and five hits in four innings. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, striking out Ceddanne Rafaela and getting Romy Gonzalez to ground into a double play.

Mitch Spence (3-5) allowed two hits in 3 2/3 innings and Hogan Harris got four outs for his third save.

METS 8, PADRES 3

NEW YORK (AP) — Brett Baty hit a two-run homer that capped a five-run first inning for New York, who beat San Diego to win consecutive games for the first time in two weeks.

Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso and Cedric Mullins also went deep as the Mets improved to 4-9 this month. They won their second straight following an eight-game losing streak — their longest since 2018.

New York began the night 1 1/2 games ahead of Arizona in a four-team race for the final National League wild card.

Brandon Nimmo had an RBI single in the first and Jeff McNeil delivered a two-run double off an ineffective Michael King in the opener of a three-game series between NL playoff contenders.

Jackson Merrill, Jake Cronenworth and Freddy Fermin homered for the Padres, who occupy the second wild-card spot, four games ahead of the Mets. San Diego entered Tuesday two games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

Struggling lefty Sean Manaea (2-3), serving in a piggyback role behind Clay Holmes, allowed one run in five innings of relief for the win.

GUARDIANS 7, TIGERS 5, 10 INNINGS

DETROIT (AP) — Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez, José Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo combined to give Cleveland four extra-base hits in an extra inning for the first time in 64 years, and the Guardians beat Detroit in the 10th for their 10th win in 11 games.

Pinch-hitter Kerry Carpenter tied the score 3-3 with a two-out homer in the ninth against Cade Smith (7-5), who blew a save for the sixth time in 21 chances.

Cleveland extended a winning streak to five for the fifth time this season, matching its high, and improved to 11-6 in extra innings — the most extra-inning wins in the big leagues. The Guardians began the night three games behind Houston for the last AL wild card and closed within 5 1/2 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers.

The Guardians’ first our batters in the 10th had extra-base hits off Will Vest (6-4), when Kwan doubled, Martínez tripled, José Ramírez and Kyle Manzardo doubled. Gabriel Arias added a one-out RBI single for a 7-3 lead.

BREWERS 9, ANGELS 2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — All-Star Freddy Peralta allowed two hits, struck out 10 and won his NL-leading 17th game, Christian Yelich hit his 29th homer and drove in three runs and Milwaukee beat Los Angeles.

Peralta (17-6) extended his career-high in wins and tied the New York Yankees Max Fried for tops in the majors in victories. Peralta also tied the franchise record set by Zach Davies in 2017.

Peralta allowed one run on two hits over six innings and walked two. The only hiccups were Carter Kieboom’s bloop single and Denzer Guzman’s first career home run.

Peralta had plenty of support in his 31st start of the season.

Yelich did the heavy lifting, but Sal Frelick hit a sacrifice fly, Caleb Durbin, Andrew Vaughn and Jackson Chourio each drove in a run and William Contreras singled home two more.

Christian Moore added a solo shot off Grant Anderson in the seventh.

Angels starter Caden Dana (0-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.

CARDINALS 3, REDS 0

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Michael McGreevy pitched seven sharp innings, Thomas Saggese hit a two-run homer and St. Louis beat Cincinnati.

It was another costly defeat for Cincinnati, which has lost four of five and dropped three games behind the New York Mets for the last National League wild card.

St. Louis remained 4 1/2 games back of the Mets with 10 to play. The Cardinals also need to climb over Arizona and San Francisco.

McGreevy (7-3) allowed three hits and three walks while striking out six. The rookie right-hander threw 91 pitches.

A pair of relievers finished the three-hitter.

Reds starter Andrew Abbott (9-7) went 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs and eight hits while striking out seven. A trio of Cincinnati relievers combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings.

Brendan Donovan doubled leading off the first and scored on Nolan Arenado’s sacrifice fly. Alec Burleson singled in the third and was aboard for Saggese’s homer.

YANKEES 10, TWINS 9

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — David Bednar just held on to get the final three outs, and New York held on to beat Minnesota after nearly wasting a nine-run lead.

Anthony Volpe had two hits and an RBI in his return to the starting lineup after getting a cortisone shot in his left shoulder, and Trent Grisham hit a three-run homer in the second as every New York starter had a hit and the Yankees built a 10-1 lead by the second.

Rookie Cam Schlittler allowed four runs, three hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings but the Yankees held on and lead Houston by 1 1/2 games for the top AL wild card. New York remained five games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East.

New York’s bullpen has a 5.49 ERA since the All-Star break.

Volpe, in a 2-for-21 slide, made his first start since Sept. 9. Grisham hit his career-high 31st home run.

Ben Rice added three hits and drove in a run for New York, which bounced back after losing Monday’s series opener 7-0.

Mark Leiter Jr. (6-7) allowed one hit in 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

With the Yankees clinging to a 10-8 lead, Devin Williams pitched a perfect eighth. Bednar allowed Trevor Larnach’s one-out homer in the ninth, then retired Kody Clemens on a groundout and struck out Royce Lewis for his 25th save in 28 chances.

Zebby Matthews (4-6) lasted three innings, allowing a career-high 11 hits and tying his career worst with nine runs.

Jesús Sánchez had a two-run single for the Astros, who nearly squandered a 6-0 lead. But they remained a half-game behind red-hot Seattle for first place in the AL West and moved a half-game ahead of Boston for the second of three American League wild cards.

Houston led by five when pinch-hitter Rowdy Tellez walked with two outs in the eighth inning. Jonah Heim’s pinch-hit homer off Enyel De Los Santos cut it to 6-3.

Kyle Higashioka singled before an RBI double by Josh Jung pulled Texas to 6-4 and chased De Los Santos.

Bryan Abreu took over and walked Alejandro Osuna before pinch-hitter Adolis García’s run-scoring single made it 6-5. Abreu retired Cody Freeman on a flyball to end the inning.

In the ninth, Abreu allowed a leadoff single to Josh Smith and a two-out single to Heim before striking out Higashioka for his seventh save.

The Astros led by two and had runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth when Yainer Diaz hit an RBI double to make it 3-0. Sánchez followed with a single on a grounder to right field to score two more. Peña singled to chase starter Merrill Kelly (12-8).

BRAVES 5, NATIONALS 0, 10 INNINGS, 2ND GAME

WASHINGTON (AP) — Chris Sale struck out nine while allowing three hits over eight innings, and Matt Olson hit a bases-loaded triple in the 10th to lead the Atlanta Braves over the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Tuesday for a day-night doubleheader sweep.

Atlanta took the opener 6-3 as Olson homered for the fourth straight game and has won three in a row following a four-game slide.

Washington (62-90) reached 90 losses for the fifth straight year, a first for the Nationals/Montreal Expos franchise.

After the start of the second game was delayed two hours by rain, Sale walked none and lowered his ERA to 2.35. Tyler Kiney (6-3) followed with two innings of two-hit relief.

Drake Baldwin hit a go-ahead double off Mason Thompson (1-1) that went over right fielder Dylan Crews. Olson, who had been 0 for 4, hit his second triple this year and Ozzie Albies added a sacrifice fly.

MARLINS 6, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) — Eury Pérez pitched five scoreless innings, Dane Myers and Jakob Marsee each drove in two runs and Miami beat Colorado for its fifth win in its last six games.

Javier Sanoja, Heriberto Hernández and Eric Wagaman — who recorded his fourth consecutive multi-hit game — had two hits apiece.

Myers, who was activated off the 10-day IL earlier Tuesday, doubled to drive in Hernández and Wagaman, and then scored on a double by Sanoja that chased Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (4-16) to make it 6-0 in the sixth.

Colorado’s Mickey Moniak hit a three-run home run in the eighth. Brenton Doyle singled to lead off the ninth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Yanquiel Fernández before Moniak capped the scoring with an RBI single.

DIAMONDBACKS 6, GIANTS 5

PHOENIX (AP) — Jordan Lawlar’s infield single with the bases loaded scored Corbin Carroll with the winning run in the ninth inning, and Arizona erased an early four-run deficit to keep pace in the playoff race by beating San Francisco.

Both teams are chasing the New York Mets for the final National League wild card. The Mets (78-73) beat the Padres 8-3 earlier Tuesday, but the Diamondbacks remained 1 1/2 games back with their fourth straight win.

The Giants fell three games behind New York.

Carroll started the ninth with a single, Gabriel Moreno followed with a walk and then Blaze Alexander reached on a bunt when second baseman Casey Schmitt couldn’t stay on the bag while taking a throw from pitcher Ryan Walker. Schmitt was charged with an error.

Lawlar then hit a weak grounder that just got past Walker. First baseman Wilmer Flores tried to get the speedy Carroll at the plate, but the throw was late.

The Giants jumped all over D-backs lefty Eduardo Rodriguez in the first inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Matt Chapman had a sacrifice fly, Flores added an RBI single and Jerar Encarnacion capped the outburst with a two-run double.

Arizona cut its deficit to 4-3 in the second on Alexander’s RBI single and a two-run homer by Adrian Del Castillo. Carroll tied it at 5 in the fifth on an RBI single.

San Francisco navigated the entire game with its bullpen. Tristan Beck made his first start of the season, giving up three runs and five hits over three innings.

PHILLIES 9, DODGERS 6

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After Shohei Ohtani pitched five hitless innings for Los Angeles, Philadelphia’s Rafael Marchon hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer off Blake Treinen with two outs in the ninth inning for a win.

Brandon Marsh had a two-run homer and Max Kepler added a solo shot in a six-run sixth after Philadelphia. Ohtani’s 50th homer leading off the eighth helped the Dodgers tie the game 6-6.

The Phillies erased a 4-0 deficit against Justin Wrobleski in another stunning collapse by the Dodgers bullpen. Philadelphia rallied for four runs in the seventh and eighth innings and another in the 10th on Monday to clinch its second straight NL East title with a wild 6-5 victory.

After Ohtani’s homer, the Dodgers loaded the bases on a double, a walk and a single before Alex Call’s sacrifice fly scored Teoscar Hernández with the tying run.

Ohtani struck out five and walked one, throwing 42 of 68 pitches for strikes in his 13th mound start of the season and 99th of his major league career. He retired his final 13 batters.
