The Boston Red Sox are aggressively pursuing a top-level starter via trade after failing to re-sign Alex Bregman, sources told WEEI's Rob Bradford.

Freddy Peralta is one player the Red Sox have spoken to the Milwaukee Brewers about, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Boston's front office is also high on free-agent left-hander Ranger Suárez and met with fellow southpaw Framber Valdez in November.

The Red Sox feature a starting rotation of Garrett Crochet, Brayan Bello, Patrick Sandoval, and offseason acquisitions Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo. Acquiring one of Peralta, Suárez, or Valdez would be a significant upgrade while providing considerable depth.

2025 stats

PITCHER IP ERA FIP WHIP
Freddy Peralta 176.2 2.70 3.64 1.08
Ranger Suárez 157.1 3.20 3.21 1.22
Framber Valdez 192 3.66 3.37 1.25

Boston's rotation finished 12th in ERA and 15th in FIP last season before acquiring Gray and Oviedo. It will need to improve to compete with the powerhouse offenses of the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and New York Yankees in the AL East.

The Yankees and Blue Jays finished top four in the majors in runs scored last season, while the Orioles have upgraded their offense significantly this winter by acquiring Pete Alonso and Taylor Ward.
