Toronto Blue Jays right-hander José Berríos will undergo surgery to repair a stress fracture in his elbow Wednesday.

There is concern that there is also damage to a ligament in the elbow, which will determine how much time Berríos will miss.

"There may be some ligament stuff going on," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Saturday, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. "They're going to figure that out when they're in there."

Berríos hasn't pitched in the majors this season, last appearing in a big-league game Sept. 24.

The 31-year-old posted a 10.67 ERA and 1.81 WHIP in four minor-league rehabs starts, while struggling with reduced velocity.

Berríos, who has made 30-plus starts in a season seven times in his career, is under contract with the Blue Jays through 2028.

The Blue Jays' rotation is also operating without injured starters Shane Bieber, Cody Ponce, and Max Scherzer.
