PHOTO: Jackie Robinson's 1947 Rookie of the Year Award is up for auction (for $66,000)
In 1947, Jackie Robinson made his major-league debut at the age of 28. He batted .297 with a .383 on-base percentage in 151 games en route to earning the very first Rookie of the Year Award that season.
Robinson hit 12 home runs, led the league in sacrifice hits (28) and stolen bases (29), and recorded 175 hits, all while carrying the enormous weight of breaking the color barrier in baseball.
It's no wonder the award, most recently received by Marlins' Jose Fernandez and Rays' Wil Myers in 2013, now bears his name.
The modest original prize given to No. 42 is now up for auction, presented by Robinson's wife, Rachel, with her letter of authenticity. With an end date of January 10, 2014, it has generated four bids and is sitting at $66,550.
