The Blue Jays signed another candidate on Thursday to compete for playing time at second base this season, inking veteran Chris Getz to a minor-league deal, general manager Alex Anthopoulos told reporters.
The club's contingent of second basemen from 2013 -- comprised of Maicer Izturis, Emilio Bonifacio, Mark DeRosa, and rookie Ryan Goins -- struggled mightily last season, hitting a combined .216/.258/.297 with just seven home runs. While manager John Gibbons stated last month that Goins represents the favorite to land regular playing time at the position this season, the acquisition of Getz suggests the club may not be completely enamored with the young infielders' bat.
Getz, who was non-tendered by the Royals earlier this offseason, endured a disappointing season in 2013, producing -0.1 wins above replacement while hitting .220/.288/.273 with one home run across 78 contests.
