Report: Pirates OF Starling Marte turned down at least 2 multi-year contract extensions
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte has turned down at least two multi-year contract extensions this past winter, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune-Review.
The 25-year-old won't be arbitration eligible until 2016 and can't become a free agent until 2019. Specific terms of the contracts offered by the Pirates are not disclosed in the report.
The situation is eerily similar to George Springer's contract situation with the Houston Astros. Springer was offered a seven-year, $23-million extension, but elected to turn it down for fears of outperforming the contract.
The Pirates have been shelling out big money to secure their future outfield in recent years, inking Andrew McCutchen to a six-year, $51.5 million extension in 2012, and Jose Tabata to a six-year, $15.5 million deal in 2011.
Marte hit .275 with 17 home runs and 52 RBIs in 135 games for Pittsburgh last season and was a Gold Glove finalist.
