It appears manager Ron Roenicke plans to go with Rodriguez as his closer until further notice, MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports. The decision came after projected closer Jim Henderson struggled with diminished velocity and command in spring training. "That's just a decision we had to make," Roenicke said. "I talked to [Henderson] about it and I talked to 'Frankie' [on Monday] about closing. We feel good about it."
Analysis:
It should be noted that Roenicke said the Brewers wanted to give Henderson a couple of outings in middle relief to reestablish his velocity and regain some confidence, so it doesn't sound like Rodriguez has a ton of job security as of yet. Nevertheless, the fact that he'll probably see at least the next handful of available save opportunities makes him an interesting commodity in most leagues. The 32-year-old was dependable as a middle reliever last season between the Brewers and Orioles, posting a 2.70 ERA and 54:14 K:BB over 46.2 innings.
