Overview
A consensus top-three pick, Aiken is a hard-throwing lefty that scouts say has the size and polish to be a front-of-the-rotation arm.
Aiken, whose 10-strikeout performance last September helped Team USA win gold at the 18-and-under World Cup, sports a fastball up in the 95 miles per hour range with an arsenal that includes a curveball, changeup and cutter. Despite showing inconsistent fastball velocity during his junior year, Aiken rebounded in a big way this year, averaging nearly two strikeouts per inning.
Scouts say the 17-year-old projects to have plus secondary stuff with a repeatable delivery that helps alleviate injury concerns. History suggests the top pick is sometimes affected by signability, and most scouts agree that would be the only thing holding Aiken back from going to Houston at No. 1.
