The Minnesota Twins selected high-school shortstop Nick Gordon, widely considered the top middle infielder available, with the fifth pick of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft on Thursday evening.
Gordon boasts some impressive baseball lineage, as the son of All-Star reliever Tom Gordon and brother of current Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon.
"I'm so proud of him," Dee told MLB.com's Adam Berry last month. "He was just a little kid following us around, and now he's one of the best prospects in the country. He's smooth in the field, got great instincts, a good arm. He's a leader. He's flamboyant with a lot of energy. He works hard and plays the game the right way. He listens to his coaches. He definitely reminds me of J.J. Hardy, offensively and defensively. He'll be a good everyday shortstop and captain of the infield."
Like his older brother, the 18-year-old doesn't possess an overly muscular physique, but Gordon still hit .494 with a .576 on-base percentage in 27 games for Olympia High School this season, and was named 2014 Preseason Mr. Baseball from Florida by MaxPreps.
The consensus among scouts is that Gordon, who can touch 94 miles per hour on the mound, will be able to handle shortstop at the professional level. However, Gordon is committed to Florida State University at the moment, which could prove problematic for the Twins.
Gordon's selection with the fifth overall pick isn't a surprise to most experts and he will make substantially more than his family members did when they were drafted.
Great pick by Twins with Nick Gordon who could end up the best position player in this draft. Smallest risk of any player in this draft
