The field of 64 has been whittled down to 16 teams, each of which hopes to claim a pair of victories in their best of three series to earn a trip to Omaha, Nebraska.

Here's what you need to know from the opening day of the college baseball Super Regionals.

Nashville Super Regional

Vanderbilt 11, Stanford 6

Standout performances

Bryan Reynolds, LF, Vanderbilt: 4-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB
Xavier Turner, 3B, Vanderbilt: 2-for-5, R, RBI, 2 SB
Alex Blandino, 3B, Stanford: 1-for-4, 2 R, BB

Game summary

Runs weren't hard to come by on Friday afternoon when the Vanderbilt Commodores and Stanford Cardinal met in the Nashville Super Regional opener.

The Commodores came out patient and it paid off for them in spades as four of the team's first six batters drew a walk. The team would score four runs in the first inning, three in the second, and three in the third en route to a 10-0 lead.

That looked to be enough for starting pitcher Tyler Beede. Just a day removed from being selected 14th overall in the MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants, Beede needed just two batters above the minimum to get through the first inning, but met some trouble in the fourth inning and would be removed from the game after 4 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs.

Things would settle down once the bullpens came into play, as only one run was scored after the fifth inning, giving the Commodores an 11-6 victory and a 1-0 lead in the Nashville Super Regional. Vanderbilt will look to advance to Omaha with a victory in Saturday's matchup at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Austin Super Regional

Texas 4, Houston 2

Standout performances

Mark Payton, CF, Texas: 3-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, R
Ben Johnson, LF, Texas: 1-for-4, 2 R, BB, SB
Josh Vidales, 2B, Houston: 3-for-3, RBI

Game summary

Texas Longhorns head coach Augie Garrido had to be happy with the way his team opened game one of the Austin Super Regional against the Houston Cougars on Friday.

With Ben Johnson on first base and one out in the top half of the first inning, Mark Payton launched a two-run home run into the bullpen in right field to put the Longhorns ahead 2-0. The hit extended Payton's streak of reaching base to 100 games.

The lead was up to 4-0 by the fifth inning, just about the only time the Cougars could get a anything going offensively. The team banged out three consecutive singles to start the inning before a 1-6-3 double play poured cold water on the rally.

The second game in the series goes on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Louisville Super Regional

Louisville 5, Kennesaw State 3

Standout performances

Nick Solak, DH, Louisville: 3-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, R
Kyle Gibson, C, Louisville: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 R
Kyle Funkhouser, RHP, Louisville: 7 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 7 K, 5 BB

Game summary

The Louisville Cardinals trailed for much of Friday's Louisville Super Regional opener against the Kennesaw State Owls, but the Cardinals were able to overcome a 3-1 deficit with a big eighth inning.

The Cardinals entered the eighth trailing 3-2, but brought three across the plate in the bottom half of the inning, capped by a go-ahead two-run double by Nick Solak. Nick Burdi shut the door in the ninth to seal the win.

Selected with the 11th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays in the MLB Draft on Friday night, Owls catcher Max Pentecost went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

The Cardinals and Owls will be back at it on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Stillwater Super Regional

UC Irvine 8, Oklahoma State 4

Standout performances

Taylor Sparks, 3B, UC Irvine: 4-for-5, 2 R, 2 2B
Elliot Surrey, P, UC Irvine: 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 5 K
Tanner Krietemeier, 1B, Oklahoma State: 2-for-4, HR (10), 4 RBI

Game summary

UC Irvine found themselves down 1-0 after one inning, but scored two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth en route to an 8-4 victory over the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State, who registered 28 come-from-behind victories on the season, scored three in the eighth thanks to an opposite field three-run blast by first baseman Tanner Krietemeier, but couldn't muster any more runs, as Evan Manarino entered the game with none out in the eighth and eventually retired all six batters he faced.

UC Irvine third baseman Taylor Sparks, a second round selection of the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB Draft, recorded four hits in the contest.

The win by UC Irvine puts them in good position to move on to the College World Series, as 7 of the 8 teams to win Game 1 of the Super Regional Round in 2013 went on to win the series.

The teams meet again on Saturday at 10:00 p.m. ET.
