The recovery process officially began Tuesday for Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters, as the 28-year-old underwent season-ending surgery to replace his wonky ulnar collateral ligament, MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli reports.
Wieters, who was not considered a candidate for surgery when his sore elbow was first examined by Dr. James Andrews in early May, also had a bone spur shaved down and had a nerve transposed on Tuesday.
Whole thing didn't take longer than 20-30 minutes. He will probably stay overnight and the head back to Atlanta.

A two-time All-Star, Wieters will begin some form of rehabilitation almost immediately, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko, and could be ready by Opening Day next season.
