The Virginia Cavaliers weren't able to extend their early lead Monday, as Vanderbilt starter Walker Buehler managed to work around a leadoff double to keep his team's deficit at 2-0 through two innings in Game 1 of the College World Series championship round.
Cavaliers designated hitter John La Prise opened the frame with a double down the left field line, but Brandon Downes proved unable to advance him to third base in the subsequent at-bat as he flew out harmlessly to center.
Nate Irving then grounded out to second base, putting La Prise on third base with two outs, but Buehler was able to strike out leadoff hitter Branden Cogswell with a 3-2 curveball to quash the threat.
