Yankees GM: 'I have to reinforce our pitching'
With Masahiro Tanaka expected to miss at least six weeks with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is keenly aware he needs to find some reinforcements for his rotation.
"I have to reinforce our pitching, in my opinion," Cashman told ESPN's Andrew Marchand in a phone conversation Thursday. "I have things that I feel I have to try to do, that I'm trying to do, but it is easier said than done."
The Yankees own a 47-47 record at the All-Star break and remain in contention for a postseason berth, but their rotation has been decimated by injuries. The club's starting corps own a 4.01 FIP this season, the 11th-worst mark in the majors, while yielding more home runs than any other American League club.
"We have to try to improve, reinforce and upgrade, certainly," Cashman said. "We certainly we would love to have some significant upgrades but when you lose four out of five starters, it is hard to re-materialize the same type of abilities with the guys you lost. It is whether you incrementally upgrade."
