As teams search the league for second-half reinforcements, those interested in New York Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy will have to look elsewhere.
Murphy, who appeared in his first All-Star game earlier this month, is attracting plenty of attention, but it appears the Mets would prefer to hang on to the 29-year-old infielder rather than deal him away before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, a source told Newsday's Marc Carig.
Though Murphy would fill the needs of various teams in playoff contention, his struggles since the All-Star break don't seem to be a deterrent. He's only accumulated five hits in 30 at-bats since the break with a dismal .167/.194/.267 slash line.
But his overall season numbers continue to garner attention, as he sports a line of 284/.332/.402 through 449 plate appearances with seven home runs, 38 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
The Mets apparently consider him an important component to their future plans, based on the fact they sit seven games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League, and likely have their sights set on what needs to be improved to ensure a successful campaign in 2015.
