Clay Buchholz on frustrating season: 'I don't know how to explain it'

Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz labored through another disappointing start Sunday night, surrendering seven earned runs while squandering two separate leads over five innings as his club fell 8-7 to the visiting New York Yankees.

“Yeah, it’s pretty frustrating,” Buchholz told ESPN's Joe McDonald after a long pause. “I don’t know. I don’t know how to explain it. It’s definitely frustrating.”

Buchholz, who became one of the club's more senior pitchers after the Red Sox traded both Jon Lester and John Lackey on Thursday, owns an ugly 6.20 ERA across 18 starts this season and has surrendered seven earned runs in successive outings.

"It's been a frustrating year for me individually and obviously the organization. It’s definitely not the way we want to go out there and wear the Red Sox uniform and not perform on any given night. A lot of that is on my shoulders, not picking up the weight that I need to pick up during the season."

"I know you’re not supposed to look up at the board and look at numbers, but everybody sees it. It's a constant battle, going out there trying to throw up zeros and when it doesn't happen it gets more frustrating and that’s part of the game. That’s why the game is hard and you've got to find a way to get through it."
